-- Only systems left --
Had our aerodynamics test this morning, got another 100% despite spending way too long at the O club the night before. The rest of this week and next we have systems class. It's the final groundschool we have before we hit the flightline Sept 8th. I am looking forward to it since it is concrete concepts we are actually going to get a hands on look at, unlike aero, medical, etc. I am more into the technical stuff so this is going to be right up my alley. We also had a page count today where a couple of IP's from the flightline came by and went through our publications with us page by page to make sure we had made all the changes and revisions that would be required before we hit the flightline. You can actually bust a checkride for having missed a pubs change so it paid to pay attention. Kind of silly though that they print some of us brand new publications then we have to go into them and put all the revisions in...maybe change the final product? Not much else going on other than getting excited about heading to South Padre this weekend. We have about 10 guys going so it should be a blast.

-- 1/4 Academics done... --
Well there are about 400 some total academic test questions at UPT, and we just finished about 100 of them. Got another 100% on the flying fundamentals test, again it was pretty much just a review for me of airspace, performance charts, and the factors that affect take-off and landing distances. A few more "club members" bit the dust though so the members are dwindling. Not sure what you get for being the last one in, but I'll try my best. Sitting in San Antonio right now taking it easy for another weekend. We have a friend who keeps an apartment here so it is going to be a fairly cheap weekend for once, which is nice even if there is no furniture. Next week we go into aerodynamics and I think some systems at the end. Those will be nice as it will be learning something new for once. One thing new we did learn this week was about the overhead pattern we are going to be flying in the military. It's the one where you fly right over the airport then make a 2g turn around into the pattern. Looked complicated but a lot of fun. So two more weeks until the flightline, and things are going to get extremely interesting.

-- CAI --
I would just like to take a moment to say how awesome the computer aided instruction is here. It is a program where more than half of our academic classes are taken at our own pace on an individual computer terminal. Instead of everyone in the classroom, asking question after question, falling asleep and not getting anything done, we get to do it as slow (or as fast) as we want. Today I did 4 hours of lessons in around 20 minutes...It is especially helpful for guys like me who have learned a lot of this stuff already and maybe just need a quick recap. Other news, had the maid service just leave my room. I was waiting for her to finish, sitting in my neighbors room, when she came in quite upset at me. "You no get this room cleaned ever?" Hehe she wasn't too happy with my dirty tub and un-made bed. I guess the 10 bucks I am paying isn't worth the 10 minutes it took her to clean the entire place. Also, have labor day weekend set up today. Me and a bunch of friends are going to South Padre Island. We got a 4 bedroom beachhouse for the weekend so we are all pretty pumped. Just need to get all these pesky tests out of the way first!

-- Still in the club... --
Got 100 on the weather test this morning, so I'm still a part of the ever dwindling 100 club. We learn what they call "flying fundamentals" this week which is airspace, vor's, etc. etc. Basically flying stuff that is universal to all flying, basically more refresher stuff for some of us. Personal news not much going on, kind of bummed out we were on our way to the only casino in 100 miles until I looked it up on the internet. Place looks like it is run out of some guys garage, www.kickapooluckyeaglecasino.com, and the webpage was made by a 3 year old. Oh well, we're going to play some poker at the Kuwaiti princes house so it should be a good time. Only academics this week so I will talk more after the next test.

More academics this week, focusing on weather. It was mostly a review of stuff I had learned in civilian flying, but a good review anyway. We have a test on it all on Monday which shouldn't be too difficult. Friday was kind of cool, my class sat at the back of the graduation of class 03-13 (We were 04-13). The commander acknowledged us and gave a little speech about how we "may" make it up there...Very inspiring. The showed a few of the standard air force flying videos (pretty cool actually, still get me pumped up). Then the guest speaker, a two star general, gave a little speech and they passed out the wings. It was pretty cool to see where I would be in 12 months, I mean where I "may" be...hehe. Some guys got the wings their fathers or grandfathers had worn when they were flyers, pretty cool. Anyway that afternoon me and the other reservist in my class met about 12 others to meet the General, who happens to be not only a 2 star general in the reserves, but also a FedEx captain, and a woman! She basically just talked to us about what was happening in the reserves and asked if we had any questions or problems with pay. I kind of wished I still had my pay problems (took awhile to get it started), would have been funny to have a 2 star calling finance for me! More of the same this week, systems and aerodynamics I think.

-- Phys complete --
Passed the survival test today, got another 100...wonder how long that will last. Also passed the FACT test, although it showed me I am definitely weaker than I used to be in college...But it's over so that's a good thing. Tomorrow we start learning about weather, with a test on it on Monday. Shouldn't be too hard, I have looked over a bunch of it and it seems like a lot of review from my old flight school so far.Got some scary news today, me and the other reservist in my class have to go meet a general on Friday. Excuse me, that's a General with a capital G. Have no idea why. Will find out tomorrow. I am frightened.

-- Not Weekend --
Well back to school...Today we learned how to set off flares so they can find us when we inevitably crash and burn. Mine was the only one in the class that was a dud! Don't know what kind of omen that is but I am quite disturbed by it. We have our last physiology test tomorrow, all on survival skills. I am still alive after 25 years so I figure I should do ok on it. We also have the FACT test (something something conditioning test) tomorrow. It tests your muscles and is not necessary to pass, but I will be annoyed if I don't. I have to leg press 300 pounds so we shall see... The weekend was pretty fun, we met as a class at the lake and floated all day next to a party boat with a keg in it. I put on two layers of sunblock and still got burned but it was all in good fun. Few pictures for you. First one is from our night vision class where I helped demonstrate the effects of flash blindness to an unknowing volunteer using my camera flash:
Next is my buddy lighting off a flare, note the subsequent flare dance:
Finally we have the whole class getting jiggy with some flares:

-- Weekend --
Had our first test at UPT today, got a 100%, or "cent-pour-cent" as Dad is fond of saying. I didn't find the test too challenging but there were a few in our class who struggled, and 2 got below to 85% needed to pass. Not too too big of a deal though as long as they pass the retake on Monday. As our flight commander said though, not the best way to start UPT. Anyway weekend is here, going to have the whole class out on the lake this weekend on a couple of party barges. Should be a good time waterskiing and getting some Sun before it's back to the books on Monday. We have 2 more days at physiology then it's back to the OSS building for the rest of our academics (about 4 weeks worth).

-- The Chamber --
Went back into the altitude chamber today for our hypoxia demonstration. They first took us up to 35,000 feet to show us what it felt to breath through our masks under that amount of pressure. It was pretty uncomfortable, and having just eating a pizza, the gases that had expanded to more than twice their regular size didn't help either. The chamber did not smell nice once we were done...Anyway, after that we dropped down to 25,000 feet and took of our masks to experience hypoxia (lack of oxygen). You aren't really conscious to the fact that you aren't breathing in much oxygen, but the symptoms definitely let you know. It hits everyone differently, and I felt pretty giddy and eventually really disoriented. I was in chair 14 and they kept asking us questions, but each time they asked me I had to look back and see that it was really me in chair 14. We all got pretty goofy. Guess you had to be there! Anyway....after that we came back down to ground level with not a little bit of ear popping. Was kind of neat to have been that high, since although you have flown that high before in an airliner, the inside is pressurized to a much lower altitude. My body was actually AT FL350 today. So we have our first test tomorrow, 25 question multiple choice on what we learned the last week or so at Physiology. Shouldn't be too hard, will probably study for an hour or so tonight and call it a night.

-- Parachutes --
Another day down, went parasailing this morning. The day before we had practiced how to do a parachute landing, since you can't flare or anything. They then pulled us behind a truck with a parasail to about 500 or so feet. Was pretty fun. I got pictures of the practices and none of the actual jumps, go figure. You can check out my pictures here:PLF Pictures Oh PLF stands for Parachute Landing FALL btw. We also got to fake-eject from a hydraulically powered chair. My buddy got a video of it which you can download and watch here (divx required): MH-15 Chair (Right click and choose "Save As...")
We go in the chamber tomorrow which will be fun. I'm looking forward to seeing how goofy I get when I'm hypoxic. Anyway, got an exam on Friday so I am going to get a bit of studying done tonight. Later.

-- More physiology --
Got some practical experience getting into and out of the jet today, using the egress sims they have at physiology. Also learned the ins and outs of our oxygen system by sitting in the altitude chamber. We didn't ascend at all but just got used to the controls and the different oxygen settings in the airplane. Check out the concentration as I strap in for the first time!
And a few classmates in the altitude chamber breath that sweet, sweet oxygen...
Now time for Chinese food.

-- Finally! --
Well I have finally started UPT. 2 years after I started the process and I'm sitting in the classroom in a flightsuit with about 24 other Air Force pilot hopefuls. I'm pretty damn excited...(and nervous) So, let's see where did I leave off. The first day, Wednesday, we got a ton of inprocessing briefings, including a brief from the vice wing commander (or the Son of God as our flight commander put it) They both told us to keep a good attitude and if we did they would do our part to get us our wings. I have found out there is a fair number of people who actually quit the program. I imagine they must all be active duty guys because us guard/reservists have so many people waiting in line to kick our asses if we quit that the only way I'm leaving here is kicking and screaming while they drag me out. So that's all I have to say about that, but it is definitely scary to see the big white board in the transition office with all the names of the people out-processing. Yuck. Anyway happier thoughts...Day two we reported to physiology to start out training there. We will spend the next week there learning about the physical effects of flying, as well as how to get in and out of the jet ( slowly and then the extremely fast way where you say bailout 3 times first) It kind of hit me how this wasn't your mamma's flight school when we were learning how to eject. Day 3 was more of the same, with a parachute demo and some more egress training (fancy word for getting out of the plane, "get-out-of-the-plane training" doesn't sound quite as professional) With that it was Friday, and we were off to San Antonio for another weekend. Got to see the Cowboys scrimmage the Texans yesterday which was pretty cool, although damn short for 25 bucks. In other news I have a damn cold which better get its way out of my system before we get to the altitude chamber or I could be in trouble. It is really not good to miss things and have to get them rescheduled as often you have to get washed back into another class. Hopefully though my cold should be long gone by Friday when we go in the chamber. More on that then.
